गिद्ध का वैज्ञानिक नाम Cathartes aura है । गिद्ध के संरक्षण की स्थिति खतरे में है। गिद्ध एशिया, मध्य अमेरिका यूरोप, उत्तरी अमेरिका में पाए जाते हैं। गिद्ध का विंगस्पैन लगभग 130 सेेेेेेेेेेेेेेेमी से 183 सेमी है। गिद्धध रेगिस्तानों, सवाना और चरागाह के पास रहते हैं। गिद्ध के मुख्य शिकारियों में नाग, सांप, wild cat.
गिद्ध मांसाहारी हैं। वे अकेले रहते हैं। दुनिया में गिद्ध की 30 अलग-अलग प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं। वे 30 मील प्रति घंटे उड़ सकते हैं। गिद्ध का जीवनकाल लगभग 20 से 30 वर्ष है। गिद्ध की ऊंचाई लगभग 64 सेमी से 81 सेमी है। बड़े पंख और तेज घुमावदार चोंच गिद्ध की विशिष्ट विशेषता है।
